Were you ever in a situation where you realized that you were arguing with a fool?

  • Yes. I find it to be a relief because it means I don't feel any need to continue expending energy on them.

I don't argue with them as much as I used to.
It is a waste of time and should only be done if you have the time to waste and have had a couple of drinks before you do.

That’s why I’ve left several sites in the past. This post was edited by LostChild at December 21, 2017 2:38 PM MST

I came from Sodahead before it closed down in 2015.  It was a huge site and I knew a lot of people from there.  I looked into a few other places after they closed down, but they were too small to get away from some really obnoxious people that were still working out old grudges that started on Sodahead.  Even with a blocking feature on some other sites, I noticed it didn't stop the nasty posts being put up that were a personal attack.  Why any moderator would allow it is beyond me.  So I stayed far away.

This is the only place where I feel pretty comfortable.  The few here I know from Sodahead are really the nicest of the bunch.  I also have gotten to know a few others that I only know from here.

That’s great that the better ones stuck it out. I don’t see anyone here that I knew from other sites. That could be a good thing in some cases. I’m going to give this place a try, so far almost everyone has been suoer nice.

Of course!  But I am getting pretty good at shutting down fools before they get their hooks in.  It takes a lot for me to really go off on someone, but once I do, chances are pretty good that I am not planing on walking back in.

I was still quite young when I learned to spot the fool and try to not engage or be engaged.  That behavior has served me well.

Arguing is almost always a waste of time. So, if I argue with someone, I usually feel like I made a a fool of myself.

  • Yes, several times.
The common element has been developing a conversation with someone I've just met who at first seems fairly bright but, after several minutes, I've realised that the person is half drunk or suffering the early stages of dementia. When I realise I change tactics and just don't argue.
By "argue," I mean any discussion of the premises behind differing opinions. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at December 22, 2017 5:11 AM MST

No. I don't argue. I tell people what's what and let the fools do all the arguing if that's what they want.

Yes, at that point I decide to let things be, and take my leave. No sense arguing.

I try not to label other people as "fools" in the first place.

Who am I to judge another person so harshly? I find it a bit arrogant to think that I supposedly am so much better/more intelligent a person than this so-called idiot/fool with whom I'm conversing.

If anything, I might think we're all fools at one time or another.

How about someone that thinks it is cool to bully or bash someone for no reason?

You know, there ARE fools out there, Welb.  I'd like to think I am the same as everyone.  And I am, but I don't suffer fools because I don't want anyone suffering me either when I act the fool.  I want to be told so I stop.

I know, you're right, Sharonna. People can be foolish and mean.

It was late for me when I wrote that answer. And I know it's an unrealistic answer.

I'm feeling really scared lately -- yeah, again. Legitimate reasons for the fears but I'm feeling not up to it all. Leaning on God and friends. I'm doing the best I can.
    :)

I don't find you foolish. This post was edited by WelbyQuentin at December 26, 2017 8:13 AM MST

Oh yeah.  It is about the time when I realize that if I keep it up, I will become a much bigger fool than the person I am getting disgusted with.

Pearls before swine.  Don't argue with anyone actually.  Debate is fun, but arguing doesn't get anyone very far.
