A party line. Getting up to change the channel. Sitting close enough to your date in the front seat of the car that he could put his arm around you.
    Cheap power.

There is an old dam nearby that was once used for generating electricity.  (enough to power 100 homes.)  They still had an image of 'Ready Kilowatt' on the sign out front until they were bought out about 15 years ago.

No kidding?  Did they call that character Ready Kilowatt?  We had the same character in the Southwest (Arizona).

Could be.  I don't remember ever seeing his name in print.  It was an add for Arizona Public Service.

Did you watch the video? There are 4 or 5 ads that might bring back memories of when electricity was 'penny cheap'.

The safe, secure, and hopeful feeling of living in a community where everyone respected everyone else (or acted like they did) regardless of differences, and everyone welcomed and  learned from everyone else. Where the people who knew you wanted you to do well in life and have a better life than they had.   For starters.

Debutante balls.  Under the radar illegal abortions (some girls even left the country!).  Oral contraceptives that altered your whole personality and sometimes caused you to stop breathing.  Gentlemen.  Dates who pulled out or even refrained from ejaculation altogether to prevent making you pregnant. (OK I was a little older)  Screaming Yellow Zonkers.  "Rotgut".  "Beautiful Music" radio stations.  Candid Camera.  Jazz clubs.  The Monkees.  The Rascals.  "Freedom summer".  The frug.  Patty Duke.  Progressive private schools.  Sex in cars. Colt 45 Malt Liquor.  The Mercury Cougar.  Freedom of speech.  Etiquette. Charm. Admiration and emulation of success. Personal sacrifice.  Noblesse oblige. Right - we didn't have back packs for our school books like the kids do now but we used to carry them in our arms and the boys carried them in their hands.  And we had to make paper bag covers for our books because they belonged to the school.

Waiting all day for your favourite song to be played on the radio so you can tape it - then cursing the DJ for talking over the ending.
