An interesting concept... however not factually borne out.. the study of people is intensely fascinating.. and brings us into the realm of psychiatry, psychology, philosophy and even medicine.. Not saying discussing events isn't fun and all but in terms of intellectual value there's really little or no difference
Talking about people can often be characterized by the kinds of things said.
eg: "Did you see the dress Oprah was wearing? Outrageous" - Sensationalist gossip. versus - - "Can you recognize insulin shock, and do you know what to do about it? My son has Diabetes and I dont want you babysitting him if you do not know that. - fact oriented.
Dumb to talk about people? Maybe gossip can be dumb.
