But increasing the extension and decreasing the comprehension of the term "assault weapons" is really not going to help much going forward (or backward---who knows where we'll end up on this).

The point is that a lot of people assume that "assault rifle" is one word, and that there is such a thing. There is no such thing. All rifles are "assault rifles". So they ban "assault rifles", and then all rifles are banned.
