I like outside succulents for ground cover. Cheers and happy weekend!

  • I'm not the biggest fan, but I do like jade plant. I have one jade plant back home that I picked out a nursery when I was 5. It's still around and doing very well. :)

Dude, this is The Great Southwest. Cactus pads are sold in grocery stores.

    Not really

There are no cacti native to Australia and relatively few succulents. One cactus that was introduced wreaked havoc on the local environment - prickly pear.

We have a prickly pear patch in our flower garden. Beautiful yellow flowers. This post was edited by Element 99 at February 25, 2018 11:40 AM MST

Some idiot brought one here from South America and neglected to bring its natural enemies, so it went crazy and overran everything. Same with rabbits (still a problem) and Salvation Jane (also still a problem, nicknamed "Patterson's Curse"). They brought foxes over to try to control the bunnies - surprise, surprise, marsupials are easier to catch.

I've never eaten them before, other than cactus pears.

The flavor is half way between strawberry and lemon.

Yes...they have them seasonally at a local produce market here. I have the plants, but the growing season is too short here for the fruit to grow.

I snatched some from a neighbor's fence in Phoenix and made jelly. It didn't set, but it made a wonderful syrup!

There's a reason they call them prickly pears. I picked one from a plant in FL and spent an hour plucking the tiny invisible hairs stuck in my hand.

I do like the look of them, but have a tendency to overwater them, so they die in my care.  I can grow almost anything else but them.
