What is the little shovel for when hiking?

I'm not really hiking ya see.. I found this treasure map and i'm trying to find this spot here marked X on the  map. 

If you see a bear doing his business in the woods, you can bury things afterwards.

The serious backpackers feel that humans must bury their poop when out in the woods.  I'm sure they are the only animals out there burying it.  Dogs and cats have a little bit of instinct left from all of the cross and shitbreeding that has been done to them.  I see them sometimes make an effort that has no chance whatsoever of covering or burying their deposit.
