I have lost much of my sense of smell as my age advances. I would take walks in the woods in the springtime rain and the forest would give off a wonderful scent. As bizarre as it sounds, I still like the smell of a skunk that has sprayed the midnight air off in the distance somewhere. I guess only a country boy could appreciate that!
You know what has saved me, bw? I have an excellent sense of smell, but it is not as important as the realization that we can remember smell. Maybe that is the Unseen telling the elderly to let go of the senses because they are all in the mind anyway.
I was able to give up meat because I can exactly remember the smell and taste of it. Enough so, that I can feel like I have not lost a thing as there are a ton of equally good-tasting foods around as well.
So, I remember Blue Waltz perfume and could probably pick it out blind-folded even though I have not smelled it since the late 50's.
