The majority of vegetarians and even vegans who I know wouldn't dream of lecturing anyone. We tend to be peaceful people who made a personal choice in order to be more peaceful people. We withstand an almost constant barrage of criticism and lectures from meat-eaters who feel guilty for eating animals on some level, which is why they react badly to people who don't.
Typical conversation with someone who learns I'm vegetarian:
Carnivore: Why are you a vegetarian? Me: I don't like eating animals. C: Why? What about protein? What about God? God wants you to eat animals Me: I just decided I don't want to eat them. C: You think I'm a horrible person because I eat animals? Me: You eat what you want, I'll eat what I want. C: (internal voice)I CAN'T ACCEPT THAT! YOU'RE JUDGING ME, DESPITE WHAT YOU JUST SAID! I WILL NOW MOCK YOU FOR NOT EATING ANIMALS BECAUSE NOW I'M THINKING ABOUT HOW BACON USED TO BE A CUTE PIG AND I DON'T WANT TO THINK ABOUT THAT, I JUST WANT TO ENJOY MY BACON! I HATE YOU BECAUSE YOU JUST MADE ME THINK! Me: (internal voice) Sigh. Now every time I see them they're going to associate me with feeling bad about what they choose to eat and somehow bring up how I'm wrong for not eating animals.
Their hair falling out due to lack of protein. Been there, done that. Now, I am forced to once again partake of meat in hopes of restoring my hair (it is coming back slowly). I have lost the taste for meat, it is disgusting. It smells like a dead animal (go figure) and tastes just as bad. There is only one type of meat I can stand anymore, a particular organic chicken. I'll eat grass fed beef but I don't like the taste. I've been ruined, completely ruined by going Vegetarian in the past.

If you decide to go veg again, there are ways to insure you get enough nutrients. It might not have been protein deficiency; could have been iron, amino acids, selenium, folic acid, etc. Vegetarians and vegans do have to be diligent about certain nutritional needs.
Thanks for sharing this. It's good to be reminded to pay attention to such things.
More likely a deficiency in iron, or B12 (which no vegetable contains). Dark green leafy vegetables do contain iron, but not in a form that the human body can readily metabolize. So you have to eat a LOT of it to get your iron (a woman needs twice as much as a man, pre-menopause). The only non-meat comestibles that contain B12 are mushrooms, which are not vegetables but fungi, and brewer's yeast, another fungus. Either bottle-conditioned ales or yeast extracts like Vegemite or Marmite contain this. If you hate beef, substitute lamb, or kangaroo (high in iron and protein, low in fat, no cholesterol, marsupials don't produce it). Or take iron and B group supplements. Protein can be had in nuts or legumes (beans, peas, lentils). Warning - they WILL make you fart.
Cannibals are not predigest when it come to eating their Greens, Carrot tops ,Swedes or any vegetarians meals ..... They are not keen on Chillian people either...as they don't like Hot & Spicy at meal time :(
