If a pill contained all the nutrients in the proper ratios, incuding fats, protiens, carbs, minerals, vitamins and made you feel full,

would you consume nothing but them for the rest of your life if they were free.

  • "No thanks!"

I saw that episode of "Outer Limits" or "Twilight Light Zone" (can't remember which) where this couple drove into a little seaside village and spent the night. While they are there, the locals offer the couple some food that they say is made from ocean products. The couple eat the food and retire for the night.

In the morning, the couple leave the village and head on down the road.  Stopping for their first meal of the day, on the road, they find that it makes then sick and the waitress says that they should go back to the village.

Back in the village, the locals tell them that the food that they ate here, last night, will sustain them and be all they will ever need to eat. It will also be the only thing that they can ever eat again! This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at April 17, 2018 4:50 AM MDT

Well they'd be pretty useful for people like me who eat like a little birdie, but I still like eating actual food when I'm hungry.

About 20 years ago, I heard somewhere that a pill that would do that could be made---but it would be the size of a baseball.

But no, I enjoy the variety of foods available.

I would definitely get a glass or two to have something to eat when I'd forgotten to buy groceries

BUT:  Taste, Smell, How it feels in the mouth and How it looks, are only some of many other considerations that need to be known before a I can give a correct answer.

Such a pill would be about the size of a softball and weigh about three pounds. It would contain food. We already have food, and we eat it in more convenient portions.

A pill containing all the nutrients in the proper ratios, including fats, proteins, carbs, minerals, vitamins and made you feel full would roughly be the size of a cheeseburger. Why not just eat a cheeseburger? The pill itself would be the meal and take just as long to digest as if a real one. This post was edited by O-uknow at April 16, 2018 6:27 PM MDT

Yes, I'd do it! I used to say when I was a kid that I wished food would just come in a pill as I can't be bothered to eat, it always seems such a faff and takes so long.. Think of all the time it would save.

Ask a Brit and they will say, Yes, absolutely.  Ask a Frenchman or woman and they will say, No way.  I'd do it once in while especially if it means nothing would come out the other end.  Then I'd have to have some pizza or french fries or chocolate pie or shrimp or...  well, you get the idea.

The Civil Defense had hard candy that did all of that except the fullness feature.  I don't know if the government has anything like that now.  I'm feeling doubtful.

The Air Force used to have a little plug of something that they would give passengers on military flights. I know nothing about it, but the stories I've heard are interesting.

Well quite a pipe dream but no I would not. That would rob us of so many of the most vital joys of life - taste, touch, texture, smell, the feelings of particular foods on your tongue, in your stomach, almost your whole well-being.  Foods are much more than just fats and proteins and cloryphyl etc. Selecting vegetables and grains, seaweeds, beans, fish, seafood and cooking and preparing them for myself and my husband is something I look forward to on a daily basis even if sometimes I don't have the time to do all I want.  I consider that important to life, caring, health, and well-being.

Food is not as important as beer, but the question is still "How would a guy ever get laid?"

It is in development it seems: Intended for Special Forces soldiers that may need to stay active for weeks without access to 'proper' food:
