My mum liked him, they always got on, I think she liked him more than I did and he liked her more than I did... he used to call her dragon and she loved it. She would cook quiche and christmas pudding that he loved.

Yes. My mother expressed her dislike of my wife,... to other people,... one Christmas, years ago.
She has been left alone ever since. She will die that way, if she hasn’t already.

  • I wish you hadn't put in the second paragraph.

If you knew the woman, you wouldn’t feel so bad about it.

Why, Neelie?  It's his perspective on the issue.

Nobody is ever good enough for your mother. She came round eventually.

Mum didn't like her. No college degree, and even worse, a Protestant. She disapproved even more when I got my fiancée pregnant.
She came around eventually - first to kiss the bride (after me).
Didn't faze me, tbh. I knew she'd forgive me - and later found in my wife the thing I fell in love with, her compassion. Mum got cancer, cried on my wife's shoulder.
