    Of course, I'm Jewish.

Yes and it's my cross to bear.

    A bit, at least.
But from what I can figure out (and supported by people whom I know well), a lot of it is unearned guilt.

I can at least laugh a bit at my strangeness in crucifying myself.

I like that image in your question. This post was edited by WelbyQuentin at June 9, 2018 5:37 PM MDT

This is odd. One answer about Jews, one about a cross and a third about crucifying. Spooky.

Good point! Wow! (I didn't notice when I added that third one.)

Guilt comes from not fulfilling your expectations for yourself.

Once you realize that, you can examine if those expectations are reasonable and then adjust if necessary.

I have very little guilt these days, but I still occasionally feel sad when appropriate---but it seldom lasts long.

No, I keep mine in a box in the closet and only take it out for special occasions.

  • "Can't say.  How much a lot of guilt?"

My doctor asked me if I drank a lot of coffee.
I said, "How much is a lot?"
He said, "You know, two ... three cups a day."
