Scuttlebutt at the Academy of English Language suggests that the tilde will soon be going metric.
Due to the tilde's ability to eliminate text by abbreviation and thus save printing cost, the Academy decided that it should also be able to do this with shipping weight. Instituting this practice is already underway and is forecasted to be in full operation by 2019.
