Have you ever chosen something else instead of/over love? Have you chosen to do without love in order to get/secure something else?

Say something like, comfort, safety, security, your family's happiness, money? Or anything else?

There was a guy in one of the clubs I was in during college who liked me and asked me out a couple times. I turned him down because, although he was a good friend, I was just too into my work to be distracted by such a relationship. I kinda wish I gave him a chance because I didn't realize how rare my men apparently are and I fear I may end up a lonely old spinster.

Aww that's a shame, I think life is full of what if's and if only's - you were at least aware, which is more than most.  I can definitely identify with that as I am concentrating these days on my course/study and work (love the job but work with really unpleasant people)

I chose my dogs when a man gave me the ultimatum, “It’s either him or my dogs.

I'd make the same choice, anyone who tried to separate me from my pets would not be a person who really loved and cared about me. They'd be incompatible too...as they'd be a non-animal lover.

I totally agree. That’s why it’s my dogs cuddling me when I shut off the lights.  :)

No.  I was never fortunate to find love.  Therefore I do without love (involuntarily) because it isn't there.

No amount of love is worth your unhappiness, if it’s the kind of unhappy that can’t be fixed. I think love is a mixture of many ingredients including, but not limited to, trust, respect, communication and compassion. Without these, and the unwillingness of both parties to change, love won’t be nearly enough to sustain a healthy and satisfying relationship. So, I have to disagree, love alone is not enough and isn’t the most important thing.
