Do driverless cars creep you out?

They do me. Something's not right about it.

It's like an airplane with no pilot.  I ain't getting in there.

I don't trust them. I felt that way before one struck and killed a pedestrian here a couple months back.

The concept just seems weird, incredibly weird --  and terribly sad in the case you share.

Aww I knew something like that would happen. I don't know how anyone can have such a blind faith in technology. I mean, I love computers and all, but they have a habit of bugging out, crashing, causing trouble like the time I had to redo a research paper in college because of my silly computer being dumb. At leas my computers can't really kill anyone if they freak out..unless someone's dumb enough to get themselves electrocuted, but that's not the computer's fault..

I wouldn't trust one.  The more technology "advances," the less we use our brains.  If you think I'm wrong, take a look at all the zombies walking around staring at their iPhones who are totally oblivious of their surroundings.

I just don't trust them, I'll stick to my cute little guy that I control over. What I really hate about that picture is that you'll have to sit there staring at the person right across from you and they're so uncomfortably close, how awkward..

The automation of every aspect of life as directed by the Technocrats in control of everything terrifies me. What will all the people who can't be nurses, engineers, and computer programmers be? Even some of those jobs will be automated. No jobs will be left. Maybe we can become food for robots in an automat.

I hope it doesn't get to that point.

  • "So you've got four passengers in your lovely Mercedes driverless car ... which one gets the traffic ticket?"

To me, driverless cars are stupid more than something that creeps me out.

Yeah, I agree. I meant "stupid" more than "creep you out" -- not-so-great choice of words on my part for my question.
    :)

If I could, I'd change my question's wording but I won't change it since many people used my words specifically in their answers.

I don't know that i would say they "creep me out," but they make me uncomfortable.

In general I don't like the idea of having multiple functions dependent on one primary (central) "brain"---too many things to go wrong.

Plus, in general, I don't like to combine functions---I have a smart phone, but I do not want to receive my emails on it. I access them on my desktop and reply immediately when necessary.  I don't want them read to me either---somethings I prefer to read and having something read to me is never a preference since I learn visually and not auditorily.

About 45 years ago I remember reading one of those "first person" stories in Readers Digest about a person who chose to use a rescue boat with 6 crew members and oars as opposed to a motorized boat---something about in a crunch or when it otherwise counted human beings tend to be more reliable than machines.

Robotic surgeries aside, I still think that.

We already have cars that can be hacked into, giving full control to some unknown person. Independent control of all four brakes allows remote steering, and so on.

You didn't know that, did you? The only reason it hasn't happened is nobody has had any particular reason to do it. Maybe if a foreign spy wanted to off some celebrity ...
