The US has 5,525 miles of a border with Canada which is porous. Shouldn't America build a wall there too? Why Mexico and not Canada?

The United States has 5,525 miles of border with Canada and 1,989 miles with Mexico. Our maritime border includes 95,000 miles of shoreline.

Each year, more than 500 million people cross the borders into the United States, some 330 million of whom are non-citizens. There are 118,129, 875 vehicles that enter the U.S. annually and 22.5 million cargo containers.

Because we like Canadians, eh? Seriously, why would a Canadian come here? They've got free healthcare, hockey, maple syrup and a whole bunch of other stuff at home. Mexico has... umm.... drug cartels, corrupt law enforcement, and... umm... I'm kind of at a loss here. It ain't maple syrup, though, I can tell you that.

I think the wall idea is dumb, though, regardless of where it is.

Because Canada wants to keep us out, not vice-versa.  Let them build it.

  • The sad and often overlooked point of the Mexican drug cartels and the police corruption is its all mainly a result of America's love of drugs ....

Keep the Canucks out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let Mexicans in. Canadians are all tight wades and down right stupid, at least Mexicans have bottle rockets they can light off, what moon walk has Canada ever done, they're 3rd world and should not be allowed in the US.

  • The interesting thing is that a lot of drugs are also smuggled over the Canadian border into the US.

I can take you right now to a spots in NH where you can simply walk over the border with no hassles from anyone.

Canadians don't want to come to the US to live, just for health care when they want something done without waiting a year.

Hola JA, I too think it's silly to put up a wall no matter where. You asked why would Canadian's want to come to the US. Believe it or not it's for the same reason they have socialized medicine, some are put on very long waiting lists and actually die before it's their turn, so they cross the border.

I'm not sure what Americans liking drugs has to do with the drug cartel. It almost sounds like you're blaming the Americans for the illegal activity of the cartels. O_o

I've lived on the US side of both borders. You can say that the stuff happens on both borders, but there's no way it's to the same degree with the Canadian border. I never once heard of Canadian crime infiltrating my city or illegal Canadians slipping over the border and committing crimes. I see it every single day here with the Mexicans. Every day. That is not an overstatement.

Yes, I've heard of that, but they pay for medical care here and go back home afterwards. You don't hear about Illegal Canadians and how they're racking up bills in our ERs and such and then bailing.

    1. It's not because the Mexicans are brown.
    2. It's not because the poor Mexican farmers are coming because NAFTA has ruined their way of life and they would starve.
    3. It is because Mexico isn't the only country south of us. There are the immigrants from Central America. We supported their coups and now people are trying to survive them. We created their problems. Now we want to keep them out.
    4. Maybe because there is a small population of Islamists in Mexico with relatives in the Middle East.
    5. Maybe because Trump wants to isolate the US, but he forgets about Hawaii and our territories.
    6. The Texas/Mexico border is already militarized. Bill Clinton did that after implementing Bush's NAFTA. They had a clue what would happen to the Mexican economy.
    7. A wall, like China's sounds impressive. Trump is about being impressive---Trump Towers, big businesses, big casinos. This is for his image. His trademark.
    8. He hasn't told us how Mexico is going to pay for it when they can't even feed their own people. He's delusional.

  •   I believe you....but the reality is that the people coming in over the Canadian border illegally are (for the most part) not Canadians.

An intelligent  person trying to enter the US for nefarious reasons (and that is what most people seem to have on their minds IMO) would select a crossing that they could easily navigate undetected. Right?

  • It seems pretty obvious  (even to people that support him) that Trump is about creates divisions.  Some people see benefits to that, most don't.

I believe the bottom line is that Trump will say and do anything to get elected and feed his enormous ego.

  • I got to Canada frequently and many friends there.

They don't complain much about their healthcare system and emergency healthcare needs are addressed immediately.

Of course, but I'm looking at it from the angle of which needs reform/ protection more. There are a million things America can/ could/ should do, but we can't do it all. Triage. The Mexico border or our policies need help first. If both your kids fall out of a tree and one is gushing blood and the other has a scraped knee, you're going to stop the bleeding first... I would hope.

Here's a crime map of metro areas in the US...

I suppose it's possible that people are infiltrating the Canadian border and trickling out, but the Canadian border has minimal crime. The Mexican border, not so much, especially along AZ, CA, and parts of Texas. That is not seen anywhere on the Canadian border.

  • In some respects I am ... this is not an American bashing exercise just stating what I think I know ... the cartels exist purely to move drugs into the states to satisfy American demand ... their violence is all about maintaining or increasing their share of the profits ... this is all greatly simplified of course but at the heart of the matter I believe the essentials are correct. Compare the resultant violence with the more enlightened attitude of some European countries, Portugal and the Netherlands for example ... it's prohibition tried on again and failing just as miserably as it did before
