Your question asked if a driver's license or ID should be shown when voting. You didn't specify that something proving citizenship should be shown. You limited it to a DL or photo ID. Proof of citizenship should be shown FIRST - then if more ID is required, a DL or other photo ID.
I know DL does not prove citizenship because liberal states have started giving illegals DL. Which is why I said in order to register to vote proof of citizenship should be required.
No one is claiming the DL proves citizenship.....it does prove legal status in many states. My state requires either proof of citizenship or proof of legal status in the country. And not all of those are allowed to recieve a DL.
Because you don't need to be a citizen to buy guns, houses, get loans. You may have to prove citizenship for employment, but your driver's license doesn't do that.
Actually, to legally purchase a gun in The United States you must be a citizen. It’s a question on the background check. Non citizens are forbidden to posses guns and ammunition under federal law.
Citizenship should have been verified before the DL issued. We should have to show government ID or DL when voting, and that should be matched to the voter-registration roll before we vote. It should be impossible to vote twice. Also, when death certificates are issued, notice should be sent to remove from voter registration rolls. It's 2018 and I see no reason this is not automatically done.
The whole problem is the "citizenship" verification issue.---Tell us how to solve that issue first before we decided whether it's necessary or advisable on balance to have "government" id or a "DL"---And isn't a "DL" a government (state) issued ID as well?
The terms government and state are often used interchangeably in the law. Yes to your question. When the Patriot Act was born proof of identity (three picture IDs) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate) were required to get a driver license or a social security card. That has now fallen by the wayside it seems. I believe that rule should be reinstated nationally. A DL or a SS Card should be proof of both identity and citizenship like it used to be. Now states are allowing driver licenses to be issued to anyone it seems. I think it is crazy and serves only one purpose, contributing to the chaos and the destruction of the country. If states want to issue DL to non-citizens, they could certainly issue non-citizen license to drive. It is not rocket science.
Birth certificates verify citizenship very easily. Naturalized citizens have a certificate to produce as well. That, also, isn't rocket science.
These things are not hard to accomplish. The problem is the will of states and localities to be cooperative with the Federal government's responsibility for and attempt to protect America. There are many initiatives at play and most of them are non-American and evil.
Interchangeably, but whether it is federal, state, or local is a necessary clarification when answering questions like this.

Birth certificates do verify citizenship very easily, as does the naturalization paperwork. The problem is that the people least capable of obtaining such documentation are discouraged by the amount of paperwork that can be involved.---and to suggest that that is only their problem may not be the best way of handling the issue.
Of course, simple questions don't bring out the real problems---which are always in the details.
In this case state is the better choice because an ID issued by one of the several states or by the Federal government is equally appropriate for the purpose.
Having your birth certificate is a personal responsibility and I will not listen to any boo hooing because that is too hard. There are some things we must do in this life like file taxes and produce important documents from time to time. The one whining about this most likely needs no help putting food into their mouth.
