Have you heard this piece of trivia about John McCain?

On July 29, 1967 a missile was accidently launched from an aircraft (unarmed missile) and struck McCain's aircraft. It was heavily damaged., as was the ship after ensuing explosions and fires. I worked for the pilot whose aircraft launched the missile, LT((JG) Lawrence McKay.

    No, I hadn't heard that. Fascinating!

    While I don't agree with most of the military involvement our country engages in, I have a lot of respect for the men and women who serve. I think that the majority have honorable intentions and I appreciate that.

    I don't know. I would imagine they did. McKay didn't want to talk about it with me.

    I was on emergency leave here during my son's surgery, so they transferred me to our reserve station, where McKay was CO.

    It wasn't his fault. It was a surge in the electrical power and, according to CDR McKay, a mis-wiring by one of the maintenance personnel.

    He was in the aircraft when it was struck by the missile. I imagine he thought it was about him. Had the missile struck the cockpit, we would not be having this discussion.
