How did ciggerettes get to be called Fag's or Butts or any other slang term for them. What slang term are they called in your country ?

Drift.
America has had four hundred odd years to drift from how English was spoken by the first pilgrims.

Influences.
America's population has different cross sections of influence from different nationalities over time.

National tendencies.
Americans are quicker to adopt new slang terms and more of these tend to become permanent changes.

They call them that in England to...lol

That's empire thinking in its purest form. "steal their country, or if you cant, at least steal their words." No wonder the English lnguage became such a mess.

The English language has 650,000 words and rising daily...hard to keep track of them all nowadays...:(
