I do not own a boat. I mean too cheap and I don’t have the time to travel the 45 minutes to the nearest place I could use it. I’m also not a fisher or a guy who loves being on the water.
My father was a keen sailor. I used to go out with him sometimes. Vividly remember the feel of the boat's movement on the waves, the feel of winds, the changes of tides, and the imperative of the jump-to-it commands.
At the moment I do not own a boat. But in my lifetime I've owned four. I would buy another before I die but there is no one left at home who likes fishing, diving or even boating. I'd have to go alone or hire someone to go with me and that wouldn't be much fun. Maybe I'll sell my house and be a live aboard like Alf.
My Dad used to find sailing buddies at the local yacht club - no need to hire. All it took was an ad on the notice board. He met some really great people that way. They became long-term friends. Living on a boat sounds great to me - but if it were me, I'd also want a safe haven during hurricanes. I suppose, with enough warning, you could just sail out of reach of the storms till they pass. Climate change is making them more frequent and more severe. Also, sea level rise will affect jetties and marinas - many will be submerged.
