Actually, yes. A little more that a year ago we were on our way from from Stavanger, Norway to Bykle. Our destination in the GPS, we had driven several hours along narrow, winding roads through very desolate county. In time we started down a steep grade with many switchbacks. As we approached what turned out to be a Fjord, Lysefjord, the voice on the GPS said, "Drive onto ferry." What? There was no ferry and, driving onto a parking lot near a small building, we could see there were no people there either. Looking around a little and thinking we might have to drive all the way back to Stavanger, we found a ferry schedule showing two departures from that landing every day. Was the schedule current? Would they have room for us? In an hour we saw a boat coming from the wrong direction. We hadn't thought of that. Would the next ferry take us back where we had come from? NO. Just then another boat appeared in the distant west, heading east. This was the ferry and they had room for us!
For about $60, we caught a two-hour ride to Lysebotn at the eastern end of the fjord. It was a beautiful trip and when we drove off, the road took us up about 3,000 feet to Kjerag, a summit which is famous for base jumping. Base jumping is that sport where adrenaline junkies jump off cliffs wearing suits that make them resemble flying squirrels. I joked with my wife that they offered those suits or rent to anyone who wants to try it. She thought I was serious. After coffee looking out over the fjord from 3,000 feet up, we drove over one of the most bizarre landscapes, solid granite, before coming to a highway hours later. It was one of the most memorable drives and THE most memorable ferry ride I've been on.
I was glad it happened that we only had to wait an hour-and-a-half but from now on I check all the directions within the GPS to make sure there are no ferry crossings along our route that I need to be aware of. In case you've never seem base jumping, here's a link to a video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUHAflyT5Yo. If that doesn't work (It didn't work for me this time) just type in "base jumping kjerag."
Cheers.
