Should political party associations be abolished and candidates required to run as Americans in national elections, and...

...Texans/Californians/Floridians/whoever in state elections?  The terms Democrats/Republicans/Libertarians/Constitutionalists/Etc. apparently ARE divisive.  WHAT would/will it take to bring America together?

It would drive turn out lower. Most people don't want to put the effort to research candidates.

Candidates would still find a way to form groups even if they were not official.

Trump will not be able to bring Americans together because he is too busy dividing them.  In spite of his claim that he wants to unify the country, he is doing the opposite.  We need politicians who are not constantly vilifying their opponents.  We all have a right to our opinions.  There is always a compromise that can be made to move us forward rather than moving us apart.  We have a lot more in common than that which divides us.

    It sounds good in principle.
It might work if all the candidates could vote according to their policies on each issue - but it's unlikely it would ever work in practice.
Groups of candidates would start forming new coalitions in order to do deals with each other to get their agendas passed.
The only difference would be that the parties would operate in secret and people would end up having less power over what they were voting for.
