What if your name were Phil R. Up?

For those of you under 50, that's what we used to say as we drove up to a gas pump before they had self service.  A "gas station attendant" would pump your gas for you.  Hard to believe, eh?  It was also a good thing to say to the bartender when you took your date out for drinks.

  • As a child back then, I remember sitting in the back seat with my window deliberately rolled down just to get a whiff of the gasoline as it was being pumped.  (Remember Ethyl?).     I loved that smell.

    Oregon still requires an attendant to pump gas ... except in rural areas "after hours".

    It also allows for jobs.  I will happily pay to NOT stand in the rain and pump my own gas.  ;) :)  They used to ask to check your oil and your tires.  I'm not so sure they do that as much anymore but at least they have a job and you don't have to get out.  Did I say I love Oregon for that?  I still do and love the people who work at those stations, too! :) :)
