"I was cooking my own breakfast by the time I was ten years old" ... mostly because my Mother didn't like eggs and it influenced how well she prepared them.
Early teens I started doing 3 fried eggs with potatoes (2 eggs wasn't filling enough) for breakfast because I got tired of boring porridge. We raised chickens so lots of fresh farm eggs.
By fourth/fifth grade I had supper cooked and staying warm on the stove when my mother got home from work at 5:30 several days each week. I was ten and cooking meatloaf, chicken and dumplings, chicken and rice, pork or beef roasts, meatballs and gravy, pork chops..........you name it plus any vegetable that we had at the time...I knew some way to prepare it. I didn't cook on Tuesdays or Wednesdays; I had an activity on Tuesdays and we ate at Church on Wednesdays.
