It isn’t the Oscars or the prom, so unless the event is being held as black tie, I’d stay away from tuxes and black suits. Unless you are splitting the evening with an IBM Board meeting, I suggest something other than a corporate blue suit as well.
Definitely a collared shirt and jacket, and a tie if indoors, something light with some color and pizazz, but not like it came from Liberace’s hamper. Pants of the proper length in a complimentary shade to the jacket, which would be more impressive if tailored; dress shoes that coordinate with the pants, and a nice watch.
...Or throw on one of those Tony Soprano track suits, a gold chain and a pair of Jordans...

Wait, we're supposed to wear clothing at those events? Who knew? That explains all the times I've been arrested at reunions and the subsequent restraining orders . . .
A headband, big round framed and lensed sunglasses, a tie dye t-shirt with a peace sign on it, pinstriped bell bottom pants and sandals... and grow a goatee.
