What are some interesting doo-dads you know about ships?

1.   One of the most dangerous things that can happen to a ship at sea is a fire. It’s more dangerous than colliding with another vessel or a pier, enemy rounds or torpedos striking a vessel, violent storms, high winds and heavy seas, sandbars, reefs, rocks/icebergs.

2.   In ship and shipping jargon, one does not say that a ship “weighs” a particular amount, one says that a ship displaces water at a particular amount. For instance, that freighter displaces water at 110 tons.

3.   The difference between a ship and s boat is that a boat can fit on a ship, but a ship cannot fit on a boat.

Okay, I started with three, it’s up to the rest of you to add more.

Motor vessels must give way to sail.

The old saw about the conversation between the aircraft carrier and the lighthouse is a myth.

Question, Randy - what kind of tiny-a$$ freighter displaces a piddling 110 tons? Freighters can displace tens of thousands of tons. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at April 30, 2019 8:00 PM MDT
