What are some interesting doo-dads you know about ships?

1.   One of the most dangerous things that can happen to a ship at sea is a fire. It’s more dangerous than colliding with another vessel or a pier, enemy rounds or torpedos striking a vessel, violent storms, high winds and heavy seas, sandbars, reefs, rocks/icebergs.

2.   In ship and shipping jargon, one does not say that a ship “weighs” a particular amount, one says that a ship displaces water at a particular amount. For instance, that freighter displaces water at 110 tons.

3.   The difference between a ship and s boat is that a boat can fit on a ship, but a ship cannot fit on a boat.

Okay, I started with three, it’s up to the rest of you to add more.

  • "Captain's Mast" on a ship is called for disciplinary action on a sailor.

I know about what I think is called "clean sweep fore and aft" which is a navy expression for swabbing the decks.

Navy guys use the term 'splicing the mainbrace' which means the Queen is dropping a sprog.

A ship can break in two if it cannot flex and bend lengthwise with large ocean waves.  I know one WWII US Navy sailor who had this happen.  It is very bad for morale if that happens as you are heading into a conflict.

On the Victory ships, that is why they had an extra plate welded on  to correct this design flaw.  It also made the Liberty ships more valuab;e

Port = left, Starboard = left
Bilges lowest portion of the ship where water collects and is pump overboard
Ware away on a Square Rigger = changing tack (direction)

Now why did Marine Officers have the Cable on their Covers (Hats)  = to tell the Marines in the topsails they were friendly

Dunnsill = decorative part of a ship which used to have a usefule purpose

Bridge = Walkway from Port to Starboard on the original Steamships since they did not have  Poop Deck or Orlop access

    Submarines are actually called 'boats'.
The nuclear missile capability of one US missile sub could wipe out North Korea.
Aircraft carriers of old  (WWII) had wooden flight decks.
The ship's doctor can over-ride the orders of the Captain. (US)
