Because people let their pain and ego get in the way of getting stuff done.

My ex-wife and I had a comparatively non-messy divorce. We agreed roughly on who would get what, we hired a legal service which helped draw up and file the appropriate documents, and we got it done. But we tried very hard to not let our own pain get in the way of it. Others seem to feel it's more important to make the other party pay a price for their pain.

Aha!  I knew It; you only want me for my tilde, don't you?  Well, admit it!

I should have seen this from the beginning!

  • It's sad, it shouldn't...hasn't there already been enough fighting to bring them to this decision?

Because both sides want things their way. It's their final act of control and heaven forbid one gets one more spoon than the other did.

  •  I think it's about control as well. It's a power struggle.

Divorce is really messy but if you watch enough CSI and Forensic Files you can learn how to clean it up after it the right way.

  • They're not always messy.  It all depends on the individuals.  Some couples want to make divorce as painless as possible for the sake of their kids ... or just because they would prefer to just realize it didn't work out and they're better off split up.

Mine wasn't...we parted peacefully and are still friends. I have a new wife and so does she.

I guess I was pretty lucky with mine.  We both "quit" and separated before I actually filed.  There was really nothing messy about it.
