I've always been curious what sort of training they go through, to train them not to react to stupid tourists.

The whole entire tomfoolery is nonsensical and expensive and showoffy and totally debauched.

Nauseates me to see humans play-acting at nothing.  Just apeing some tradition that stands for very little in the face of progress or future.  I could see if this was a big museum.  But these statues are walking around and getting paid.  I'm not talking about just the "army". I am talking about the idiots who are standing around making a total day out of inspecting them.  What are they looking for?  Bugers in the nostrils?  Smells?  Bad Breath?  Dandruff?  I mean this is CRAZY.

Pomp and pageantry are part of every national tradition.
It has been considered a normal part of diplomacy in Europe for hundreds of years for visiting heads of state to inspect the host's household guard. I imagine Trump, in all his conservatism, feels right royally flattered.
In Asia, it's not the household guard but the entire armed services on parade.

I confess I don't like them either, but enough people do enjoy them that they'll be around till climate extinction kills us all - 12-20 years max.

I want to be the first stupid tourist in history to get one of those guards to react. I'll do things like look at their hat then say - a 1970's porn star called she wants her bush back. Cheers!

Not sure if that's really true....
What a terrible thing to kill a bear ,just to make a stupid looking hat...

Don't worry. It isn't real fur.
Except for zoos, bears became extinct in Europe hundreds of years ago.

I think you will find that they are all made of real fur actually....You don't think the army would care about Wild animals where protocol has to be enforced...

CS Lewis would heartily disagree with you (as do I) on your position about this---

Without such public affirmation of certain principles and values, we unfortunately wind up thinking that simple-minded "practical" mercenaries like Trump would make great leaders.

Men Without Chests” is the curious title of the first chapter of C.S. Lewis’ Abolition of Man. In the book, Lewis explains that the “The Chest” is one of the “indispensable liaison officers between cerebral man and visceral man. It may even be said that it is by this middle element that man is man: for by his intellect he is mere spirit and by his appetite mere animal.” Without “Chests” we are unable to have confidence that we can grasp objective reality and objective truth.

The result of such chest-less education, as Lewis warns, is a dystopian future. “We make men without chests and expect from them virtue and enterprise,” says Lewis. “We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.”
