HEART is pronounced hart. EARTH is pronounced urth. Why is HEARTH pronounced harth and not hurth? The spelling of what word that does not LOOK like it sounds annoys you most? Why?

I can't think of one that annoys me as I am used to it. Imagine a Frenchman ( whose spelling is incredibly complex) trying to read English. Olde English writers got paid by the letter, so they added letters to the words. I like fonetik languages like German and Russian. Have a great day.

The English language is a baffling thing.  Ain't it?

Because English is a mishmash of loan words from many different languages, spelling was not standardized until recently in history, and pronunciations flow and shift over time and geography, to the extent that we don't even have a single English language, but a large collection of English dialects.

It's a beautiful mess.
