A very sad child that breaks everybody's heart. Representing the suffering of the Syrian people. Yet public opinion has not been strong enough to put a stop to this mess in Syria, I don't know.

Now we learn that Assad is using chlorine gas again and has used it twice, is unforgivable.

Aleppo is a city. Fairly close to the mediterranean sea.

As a US poltitian I would say he is following the proud American political tradition of knowing little or nothing about the world outside the Amerikan borders.

But I am sure he has some strong opinion about ISIS ;-))

It has been in the news for years now. And to think one user of this site said he preferred that Johnson guy to the two major candidates. I won't embarass the user by naming him.

Gary Johnson's flub is a very good thing really, because while everyone should know where Aleppo is, and what its significance is, I can promise you he's not the only one who didn't. I know that I was only dimly aware of it. Even without recognizing the name at first, he showed more understanding of the dynamics of the area than the average person probably does.

What's good is that, for at least this 24-48 hours, more people than usual now know exactly where Aleppo is, and what's going on there. Anything that brings attention to the reality of the situation is a good thing.

    Gary Johnson is a hero.

Thanks, Jakob! It's frightening politicians don't even know geography or bother to keep up with things that happen in this world.

@Rpf, everybody is not running for President of the United States. Aleppo is the capital of ISIS! Jakob posted a map to show it's location. Yes, it has been in the news for years.

I think the UN should get together and come up with a plan. Also pressure Russia. Why are people so afraid of Russia? Russia responds to sanctions.

  • "I can promise you he's not the only one who didn't."

Everyone is a genius in hindsight with Google at their fingertips.  Other than claiming to have known where/what it is, none of these people have offered their thoughts on how to stabilize the region.

Of course. I read international news every day. Those poor syrians are suffering a lot.

I thought Raqqa was the de facto capital of ISIS? Anyway, no serious person is going to vote for Gary Johnson. I wouldn't. Even though Trump has made far worse mistakes and still weathered them, Johnson should not have made this one. But I maintain that getting Aleppo and Syria back in the forefront, and illuminating the fact that the US involvement there right now is rather dodgy, is still a good thing.

Exactly. Everyone is acting like the guy is an idiot, for failing to recognize immediately the name of a city that 90% of Americans still probably can't point to on a map without help.

Nobody has any solutions, because there is no easy one. Anyone who claims to have a magic bullet that will fix Syria is a liar.

I searched for but could not find what happened in the interview immediately prior to Johnson's gaffe. If the topic suddenly switched to Syria, I could understand the mistake. If they were already talking about Syria, that's much worse.

Aleppo is a place in Syria. I knew that when I was in junior school. Didn't Gary Johnson attend school? Or did he just wag his geography lessons? Lol:)
