Comparing composers, musicians and singers from before the year 1900 to those after 2000, has modern technology erased the need for true

talent, leaving today’s offerings to largely rely on what can be artificially produced in a studio backed up by machinery and computers?

Mostly. Every now and again, though, you get a talent who shines out regardless ...

And here she is again, almost all grown up ...

I do not think one can compare music prior to the 20th century to today's music. The lack of technology did not keep the 16th-19th century composers and musicians from creating incredible music that is still played today. How much of today's music will still be around 100 years from now? Did you perhaps mean prior to 2000? This post was edited by Element 99 at September 25, 2019 8:13 PM MDT

You may have misunderstood. I think that a lot of music composition from the dawn of mankind to the year 1900 has been wonderful, artful, inspiring, creative, etc.  The same can be said about some of the music from 1900 to today, but as more and more technology is used in practically every aspect of music, I wonder if there’s less talent involved than in centuries past.

I always enjoyed Thomas A. Edison's early recording of 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'.

I could argue that various instruments like Guitars, Flutes, Drums, ect. are machinery in the absence of electronic technology.
Humans had not yet advanced to a level where they could invent devices which created "Music" as it has transformed today (for example the electric guitar, synthesizers, yada yada)

Thank you, I should have clarified. I’m referring to electric enhancements, the use of synthesizers, sound-mixing, computer-generated sounds, artificial tweaking of voices, etc.

"Artificial tweaking" of voices to make them sound like accomplished vocalists i do not agree with. The only exception to that imho would be as effect...like reverberations to produce a unique sound

  • The so-called tweaking of voices that you mentioned has been done throughout time to improve audibility, or clarity, or even originality and creativity of the vocalization.  People would find caves with certain acoustics to enhance or dampen the sound.  They would stand on cliffs to achieve echo or distance.  They would craft things like tubes or use animal parts to sing into which might alter the sound.  Even a microphone which is a much needed tool of the vocal trade is a "vocal tweaker".  It blocks excessive breathing or even spittle lol and can with today's technology craft the voice to be almost anything.  Not to mention volume enhancement.  Many of the great performance halls of today have been scientifically designed and engineered  by construction specialists to be Vocal tweakers.  So you might as well get over it.  It ain't nothing new and it ain't never goin' away and though you may consider it an evil it is an absolute necessary one in the art form.

    (Sigh.)

Once again, I’m not saying that manipulation of the final product did not occur in the past, I’m merely asking whether or not the use of 21st Century machinery and computers is what passes For composing music in comparison to when those items did not exist.

  • It is simply a tool Randy just like hollowed out tusk were.  just because it is tech in nature and not organic doesn't lessen its worth.  That is snobbery.

NOPE.  There are way more people now.  There is way more talent. The numbers alone will jack up the sum of talent.

More people, more chances of blazing talent.

  • Something about the tone and nature of this thread is screaming with its hair on fire for a Kylie Minogue video to be flagrantly offered for everyone's listening pleasure.

This video is Twinkle Dink Approved.

Why do you have to pick the ONLY (besides Rick Astely) artist I cannot DEAL with?

She is the gay icon.  I get it.  She is kinda not that interesting.

Everything sounds like this to me. She has a one note voice and she's sexy.  WOW. So is Shakira.  She has two notes.  LOL

  • Sticks and Stones.  If she were not interesting to many on a global scale she would not have made it to where she is.  By your own admission she is an ICON.

    Don't take umbrage.

You get to hate all my music as much as you want.  Most people do. I am not knocking your choice.  I am telling you what your choice means to me.  That's all.  I also hate NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP.

I don't mind either Banana or Rama.  They were pretty good. I never saw them.  Except in 80's werid costumes.

I share her nationality and her birthday - but for mine, she lost all credibility when she became part of the SAW sausage machine.
