Why do we drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway?

Because round boxes are difficult to
    make.

If our knees bent the other way, what would a chair look like?

If our knees bent the other way, we wouldn't NEED a chair now would we?

Expand your brain, don’t restrict it.

Strap  a trapezoid to a rectangle and you have a domino's pizza "box."  Project it on the X-Y plane of the table top and you will see a is not a square.

Perhaps there is a movement afoot as the number of sides go from 4 to the present 6 and them smaller and smaller as it approaches the shape of a circle. This post was edited by tom jackson at October 16, 2019 9:31 AM MDT

Why in the world are you ordering Domino's pizza?  UGH.

The smell alone makes me puke.  The cardboard box and that pizza smell don't go together. Everyone ignores that.  I hate the smell of the box.  I don't order pizza that has that smell.

I don't like it either, but their commercial is the only one I see on TV.

I have never noticed a smell from the box, but I always open it and leave it open as soon as I get home.

My wife has hyperosmia [is an increased olfactory acuity (heightened sense of smell), usually caused by a lower threshold for odor].

Next time I bring a pizza home, I'll ask her about the cardboard smell.

What creates the cardboard box "smell"?

Yes, cardboard. Corrugated cardboard boxes have a certain smell, and the more boxes in a space you have, the more noticeable it is. Two constituents of cardboard’s scent, 4-methylphenol and 4-ethylphenol, have a “horse stable-like, fecal” smell (these are the culprits for making cardboard smell like "poop").

I saw that before I answered.

Carpet is best if aired out before being installed so that similar (or the same---I don't know) compounds have a chance to evaporate at the warehouse rather than in the home.

And yes, cardboard boxes that contain items that I have ordered have that telltale smell---I just don't notice it in pizza boxes.

And that may be because a pizza box is characteristically not tall.  (And that leads us to a discussion of the combined gas law as it applies to 4-methylphenol and 4-ethylphenol)

What is your reference for the two chemical constituents in the cardboard? The only thing I can surmise is that they are naturally occurring chemicals called cresols in the wood used to make the paper. This post was edited by Element 99 at October 16, 2019 10:42 PM MDT

I hate Domino's. Nothing to do with the box, it's just rubbish pizza. I get mine from the local family-owned restaurant.

The box is square to have space in the corners to gram the damn pizza. If the box was round, you would have that space. This post was edited by Zack at October 16, 2019 9:33 AM MDT

OKAY.  That has merit. I'll buy that.  Do they actually put it there?   I thought it was in a bag on the outside.  Oh okay.

For those who appreciate the efforts of the Shakespearean pedant (In Shakespeare's day, a pedant was a male school teacher.)

    Costs.
It's easier to design and make rectangular or square packaging which:
wastes the least amount of cardboard when cutting out the shapes,
stacks in the most compact space until needed,
and when made into a box, fits in an insulated container for secure transport and delivery.
