The gal I got my dog from refers to herself as a dame when she wants to make it perfectly clear that you better not mess with her. She will say things like - you know you better not ripe me off because I'm a real tuff dame. I think back in the 1930s the word dame meant a strong/tuff woman that didn't take any guff from man or woman. Cheers!
But after escaping slavery, she returned to the South, helped organize the Underground Railroad, and rescued others. In the Civil War, she was the first woman ever to lead a battalion of men into battle. She also was born c. 1822 and lived to be 91, which was pretty amazing in those days. "Harriet" is hitting theaters next week and should be an epic film. She was a tough, amazing woman.
