Dang...I would have liked to answer the first question, but you had to toss in another about trump. Sorry. I had a good answer, too. Oh, well.

In my family, teaching manners began when we were learning to talk.
Nothing given without a please - instantly taken away if we didn't say thank you.
Don't mention it or you're welcome after someone has said thank you.
Sorry had to be instant and, as we grew older, accompanied by a clear statement of the error and intention for appropriate amends.
I beg your pardon when asking someone to repeat something not clearly heard.

The teaching of table manners began as soon as we were old enough to sit at the dining table.
Failure to obey meant being sent to bed without dinner.

.... only a tiny proportion of manners -- which ultimately comes down to being considerate of others in all things.

As to Trump, I can't guess too easily.
It's tempting to say that he got no training in manners because his parents were nouveau riche, but that can't be right because working-class people also have good basic manners whenever they choose to express them.

I think in Trump's case, he just doesn't care who he offends. He believes he gains more by appearing to be the spontaneous ingenue - his supporters love him because it makes him seem more real, less of a political diplomat, more likely to say what he really means This post was edited by inky at October 29, 2019 7:32 AM MDT

This is an extremely thoughtful reply to my question bw. I just remember my parents teaching my younger sister and me the important of "the magic words" please and thank you. Also to respect our elders and people in authority like teachers and policemen. There was never any "mouthing off" in our house. That would be unthinkable. So it was a shock when I encountered people who seemed uninformed. Now it seems to be the preferred way of interacting. When in doubt put down others. Thank you for your in-depth and meaningful reply . I appreciate it! Happy Tuesday! :)

    I've noticed that change too.
It hasn't been as pervasive in Australia as in the States
until just recently with teenagers in the last few years.
I'm hoping that it turns out to be just a fashion and that they grow out of it.

That's why I LOVE your family sweetie. That is an awesome gift. It's SAFE to be honest about what you think but there is no need to be unkind or rude or cruel. I think politicians of a decade ago were more likely to espouse that. I have no idea why it changed. I think I'm gonna ask! Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday to thee D! :)

But D what was the TRIGGER that caused the change? Were the pols then a different breed? Did some of them actually become pols so they could HELP people? It's just so puzzling that now it's rare if non-existent that pols with different views are even civil. Thank you for your reply D. This post was edited by RosieG at October 31, 2019 10:31 AM MDT

So that is why motormouth was welcomed with open arms and why his base adores him so? He thinks he is a god and acts as such so it gives them a mortal to worship. Sheesh. It takes all kinds. Thank you for your reply D! :)

His Royal Orangeness was never told "no" as a kid. Whatever he wanted, he got - which led to a privileged entitlement mentality. Toddlers tend to throw tantrums when they don't get their own way. A wise parent ignores them. For little Donnie, tantrums WORKED, so he never learned not to.

Can you imagine motormouth ever being elected to anything a decade ago? The time was ripe for a boorish egomaniac to be elevated to the level of a god. I guess the peeps were just waiting for a mortal saviour whom they could worship contemporaneously. Motormouth showed up and the rest is history. I just wonder when the sea change occurred. What we NEVER would have tolerated let alone accepted is now prez? Vile and venal and evil and corrupt and criminal and treasonous and traitorous is IN? WHY? I honestly can't figger it out R. Can you? Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday/Wednesday to ya! Diffrunt topic. GO ASH! I wonder how long she will be number one?

Knee-jerk reaction. Obama was a decent human being, so the reaction was to pick his antithesis.

Ash is a deserving champion but I can't see her hanging on to #1 on fast surfaces. She'll likely lose that ranking over the local summer, then regain it when the tour hits European clay.

That young gal Amerescu (sp?) is really good. I think she is Canadian. I guess Osaka dropped to #2 and then you've got Halep. It's interesting to say the least. Lots of superduper young ones coming along. Among the younger ones I like Alex auge-Aliasime (sp?) I LOVE it when someone I've never heard of before plays a magnificent game and takes out a top player! That is happening more often. Thank you for your reply R! :)
