Can you share with us an expression or phrase that seems to not make sense but we use it anyway?

Example: 'Being as how...'. Where did that come from?

    Flat as a flitter

You hear it in the south.  Yankees try to say that it's supposed to be flat as a fritter, and it may be in their neck of the woods.  But in the south that mess of a fallen cake layer is NOT flat as a fritter, it's flat as a flidder.

    My fritters aren't flat....are yours?

  • "Bless you" when someone sneezes.

The phrase "Bless you" makes sense but in that context is a bit ridiculous
and built on very old world superstitions.
Bet you wouldn't be so quick to say that if they forcefully blew out
a bunch of snot and boogers on you when it happened.

Actually, for WHOM the bell tolls makes perfect sense. It is the title of an Ernest Hemingway novel published in 1940.

The book's title is taken from poet John Donne's series of meditations and prayers on health, pain, and sickness (written while Donne was convalescing from a nearly fatal illness) published in 1624. Hemingway quotes part of the meditation (using Donne's original spelling) in the book's epigraph. Donne refers to the practice of funeral tolling, universal in his time. The poem was later set to music in a choral arrangement (below), and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was the title of songs by the Bee Gees, Metallica, and other groups.

No man is an Island, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the SeaEurope is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.
