Can you share with us an expression or phrase that seems to not make sense but we use it anyway?

Example: 'Being as how...'. Where did that come from?

    The expression "I have been to...[New York, London, etc]" doesn't make sense, when you think about it, even though it is a perfectly standard construction. There is no present-tense equivalent - you can say "I go to London" or "I am in London" but not "I am to London". It is not possible to "be to" a place.

    I wonder when this form became normal?
