Do you have a favorite terribly depressing Christmas song?

I surely do - - Dwight Yoakam's "Come On Christmas"

this song, immediately in my first hearing, became one of my top Christmas songs to go to --

it's such a downer but Dwight makes me feel great about it all

(if you don't listen [shame on you], at least check out the lyrics.

:)

EDIT: GREAT trumpet parts in here, too

Come on Christmas
Please take me away
Keep me hidden safe
'Til January's second day
Come on Christmas
Come on Noel

I'll wrap myself up in the cheer
That's so abundant
This time of year
Come on Christmas
Come on Noel

Instrumental

Even though it's just September
I can forget to remember
All the empty nights
Still in my way

Come on Christmas
Embrace me with some joy
'Til the last few lonely moments
Of this year have been destroyed
Come on Christmas
Come on Noel

I'll just let visions of the season
Blind these worn-out sights
Still in my mind
Come on Christmas
Come on Noel

Come on Christmas...

I've not heard this before -- my, I like the opening instrumental part! Sort of quietly "cooks" along. Nice.

I have  to admit The Emotions had me at the get-go here -- I don't know what other songs of theirs I like but I know I've heard them before and have always liked their "sound."

    Thanks for sharing, bevo.

It took me a while to get your meaning, I think -- that even singing about snow depresses you.

If I may, I think you forgot an "o" in "bobs" in your answer above...

    Spinal Tap!
    Fun!

Even better - - i don't know if whoever made this video intended to write the lyrics out this way- - but they're singing about "Satan" but the lyrics printed on the video say "Satin." Ha!

I like that laugh at the end of the song, too.

  • I think this song is both beautiful and melancholy.
Artfully simple in its musical approach
while tackling all the complexity of unraveled relationships.

    December
    Amy Grant

    Dawn is cold and blurry
    Sunrise in the rain
    As a bird cries clearly
    Walking through the flurries
    On this Christmas Day
    You are nowhere near
    You are nowhere near, anymore

    Seasons fade and tremble
    The sun wrestles the sky
    Just like late December
    Just like you and I

    You may not remember
    Often I recall
    Love was like a song
    Looming like the winter
    Fleeting like the fall
    We have come and gone
    We have come and gone

    Seasons fade and tremble
    The sun wrestles the sky
    Just like late December
    Just like you and I
    Just like late December
    Just like you and I

Hey, there, Twinkle the Elf --

Yes, the simplicity of the song delivery here is successful, very. Very. Never heard it before, thanks!

And here is my favorite song by Collective Soul, also called "December" - - I'm sure you've heard it. Besides everything else about it, I love the lyrics to the song, especially "Turn your head now, baby, just spit me out."
And "Don't throw away your basic needs- -  ambiance and vanity."

Great to see you, ElfieTwinkleee! :)

Since I am batting 0 so far I will try again.

    1. Cold tears fall from his eyes
As he turns into the night and walks away
      Lucille runs outside
Just to see if there might be a sleigh
      Little Bobby stares down
At the plate where cookies still lay
      And tries to understand
Why momma said Santa can't stay
      Momma said Santa can't stay
Said she told him that twice yesterday
Then a car just like Dad's
      Pulled out and drove away
After mom said Santa couldn't stay
      They both heard him coming
Saw Mom run down the hall and holler wait
Doug you're drunk don't come inside
I'm not joking I've had all this I can take
He threw a present really hard
That almost hit Mom's new boyfriend Ray
And yelled ho-ho lucky for you she's here
And said that Santa can't stay
      Momma said Santa can't stay
Said she told him that twice yesterday
Then a car just like Dad's
      Pulled out and drove away
After mom said Santa couldn't stay

    YES!
    Ha!
    There we go, ha!

This is a favorite album for me and I really like this song, too!
    :)

Maybe I just posted too many ha's and smiley faces related to such a hard song. Yet, Dwight's song here -- talk about an "in your face" song that I criticized Schultz for, ha! Rather hypocritical of me though I have no trouble admitting that-- I believe all people are hypocrites in one way or another.
    :)

I'll eventually get to that other song you posted, too.
