Did you know that when cutting onions, a way to keep them from bringing tears to your eyes and/or making your hands smell oniony is to hold

them under water?  I know form personal experience that it works.

I heard on television tonight from a woman in Florida, USA that she believes holding a cracker in your mouth while cutting onions helps to keep you from crying.  I can't imagine how that would be effective, but I don't dismiss it either, at least until I try it.

Do you know any other ways to do it?

I don't have a swimming pool or scuba gear to go cutting up onions under water. Good idea though.

I have heard that before. :)  I have also heard chewing gum helps.  I've never tried it but it seems like it might.

My chef friend claims it's in the way you cut the onion.  I don't know but get tears about half the time...regardless of the type of onion (except Vidalia).  Cutting submerged sounds like an easy fix.

I might be a little late to bring this point up; but, I am assuming you are talking about rinsing them and then cutting them.  Holding them under running water while trying to handle a knife...
You'll cut one of your fingers Off!!
This will DEFINITELY make you cry!!  It would me!  For Sure!!

Nope, I’m talking about holding the onion completely submerged in water. I’ve done it lots of times and it works perfectly, I’ve never cut myself while doing it.

I'm trying to picture this.  Do you have them on a cutting board in the sink?
Are they yellow onions or green onions?

Any type of onion. There are two ways to do it:

    1) when doing only one onion or very small onions, fill a large mixing bowl with water, submerge the onion completely under the water with one Jane and cut it with the other hand, taking care not to cut yourself
    2) for a larger onion or lots of onions, plug the sink, fill it with water and cut the onions as described above

Cut up oninions with a razor sharp knife and it won't spray and onion juice when you finely manage to slice or dice with it......
