Mine used to be "Turandot". Now it's "La Boheme".
what a refreshing question.......you are to be commended!!!
the very first opera I was 'exposed' to was "Aida'..I loved the music from it...back in the late 1950's I believe it was, Sophia Loren was in the film adaptation of if.......yes, Sophia! she lip-synched Tebaldi.....what a job that must have been, to learn all those lyrics!! anyway, it was a beautiful production...it may or may not be on DVD...then in later years I got to see Zinka Milanov do it on tour when it came to Cleveland.....
Then there's Callas.....I was SOOOOO lucky to be able to have seen her when she left, or was fired, by Bing from the Met....she immediately booked a national tour and came to Cleveland!!! I can still see her on stage in the beautiful yellow gown she wore, . and THEN.....wonder of wonders, a few years ago someone released a bootleg copy of the exact same concert when she was in LA......so of course I got it...sound no so good, but nice to have anyway as a reminder of that wonderful evening...............
Few years ago I heard that Zefferelli wanted to so "Carmen' with Callas lip syncing her recording of it....WOW what a treasure that would have been!!! she'd have been able to concentrate on her acting, and not worry about her voice..but, alas, it was not to be.for some strange reason she instead chose to do "Medea" as a dramatic role.......horrible movie, by the way...........
jeeze, I sure went on.....guess I'm one of those guys who, when you ask what time it is, gives you the history of watchmaking!!! LOL.
anyway thanks again for a great question......I'm looking forward to other replies,,,,,but I won't hold my breath, right? LOL :-D
I don't like opera.
