I think Trump understand very well that he did not win the popular vote and that fact sticks in his craw 24/7. The fact that we wound up with this disaster for a president is the best reason to eliminate the Electoral College or at least change the rules so that electoral votes are based on percentages of the popular vote in that state - not all or nothing.
It isn't happening because it would require Congress to propose an amendment to the Constitution. In many cases, that would mean their candidate would not have the Electoral College edge and would lose the election. I would like to see that question on the ballot and let the people decide.
Elections are a state right. Any state is free to distribute their EC votes however they wish. Most choose to go the winner takes all route. With just a couple exceptions. Maine and Nebraska. Any state could allow their people to vote to change. But other states should not have a say in that decision.
Why? We do not have have the EC because we could not count the vote.
EC is to force the POTUS candidate to appeal to the entire country not just the more populous ones.

That sounds backwards. Why do the candidates still go for the more populous states, then? Are they all going to makes whirlwind tours of Wyoming?

Because they still need those populous states....that is the point. Wyoming is not going to get you to the top. They have to build a platform that appeals to more people in more areas.
The people individually by their vote should elect the president. I don't want to wind up with another Trump because some backwater state gave all their votes to that candidate if the majority of people in that state did not vote for him.
Name the 57 states that Obama campaigned in for election.
Or
What did Biden meant when he said “Oh and by the way, I’d sit on the stand [the lifeguard stand/seat next to the pool] and it’d get hot, and I got a lot, I got hairy legs, that turned, that turned, um, blond in the sun. And the kids used to come up and reach in the pool and rub my leg down, so it was straight, then watch the hair come back up again. They’d look at it. So I learned about roaches, I learned about kids jumping on my lap,” Biden said. Then he looked down at one of the children, “And I’ve loved kids jumping on my lap.”?
