Alas, I know only aleph, א.

Ari and I went to a kabbalistic workshop about six months ago.
It explored the meaning of aleph according to the three systems of Kabbalah.

It fascinating to discover how Kabbalists use the Hebrew alphabet as a means of exploring the nature of their god.

If I were living in Israel, I'd make the effort to learn to read, write and speak Hebrew, but where I am I have no need for it.

Ari grew up with it and is still fluent.

No. It irked me recently because it was a crossword puzzle clue and it stumped me. Grrrrrr.

I used some in mathematics and learned the alphabet and some vocabulary for a trip to the Holy Land in 2000.  I was a hero for knowing the word שֵׁרוּתִים (toilets) at a stop on the bus tour.

It's nearly all forgotten by now.

ש Shin. Shin also stands for the word Shaddai, a name for God. Because of this, a kohen (priest) forms the letter Shin with his hands as he recites the Priestly Blessing.

It is also the shape of the chambers in the human heart.

I've used shin in my post. It is of course famously used as a shibboleth, outing those who pronounced it 's'.

It has a superficial resemblance to the Cyrillic ш.

  • I know some, but it's not something I've studied. I would like to learn.

A lot of science-related and scientific words are based on Latin or Greek roots. What are some other languages that also form that basis?

Well, there's St Paul's letter to the Phallopians - they certainly came to a sticky end didn't they?
