If we lose our democracy, will it be Trumps doing, or a compliant congress?

It will be on Congress and the Republican Party. Trump would not be where he is without people willing to give up important freedoms and look the other way in order to stay in power.

It will be neither Trump's doing nor a compliant Congress. If we lose our Republic, it will be because We the People allowed it to happen but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

    Trump is dictating...
    If his will is done,
    We're in deep trouble.
    The Republican Party
is now the will of the dictator.
    Vote them out.
    Trump gets the innocent protesters
ridden over by police on horses
so he can have a photo op.
He has no empathy for people,
he sees them all as the enemy.
    Vote Him out...

I'd say rusureamisure? is half correct.
It is because The People allowed it to happen ... and it has.
We no longer live in a Democratic Republic.  We live in a Plutodemocracy.

    Neither.
It will be the sum of all the citizens' behaviours. The buck stops with us.
There has been too much siding with parties and personas and not enough engagement with policies.
There needs to be peaceful activism to change the system.
For one thing, all candidates for public office should be independently screened by detectives investigating every aspect of their life - at the expense of the tax payer. Candidates should have proven integrity and nothing less should be permitted.

Citizens need to realise that in order to have both freedom and security in a democracy, every citizen must accept and do their duty: that means each of us has a responsibility to stay fully and accurately informed by listening to reliable media such as Reuters. Every one of us must vote at every election. Each of us should be active in explaining our particular policy preferences.

Public debate on issues needs to be polite and informed - not a matter of spin, obfuscation and slurring opponents.
The rules and skills of formal, competitive debate need to be revived and turned into a cultural norm.
In addition, we need creative thinkers presenting new ideas for better systems and laws and describing how and why their ideas might work.
