I lavish my barber with both the cost of the haircut (now $18) and a generous tip, such to the point that sometimes I don’t even count it. Often, I just reach into my wallet and pull out a $20 bill and a few others other bills, never paying less than $25 or more than $35.
The irony is that my wife is a hairdresser and specializes on styles and cuts and services that pleases elderly women, the bulk of her clientele. She often receives quite handsome amounts of money in tips, making her very happy, yet she practically has a coronary about me tipping my barber. She advocates $2 to $4 for my barber per haircut; I don’t even pay her any mind. I used to try to reason with her that being in a profession where she receives tips, asking how would she take it if her clients only gave her a $2 to $4 tip each. “That’s different!” was her reply. I don’t even bother discussing it with her any more. She receives what she receives in tips from her clients, my barber receives what I pay in tips.
