What punishment should police officers get when they falsely accuse someone.

    They do indeed accuse. Ever heard of "Hurricane" Rubin Carter?  Spent decades in prison for a murder he didn't commit.

      Legally speaking, they are not the same thing.

    She was drunk/drinking and had a damaged car in the vicinity of a hit and run.  That is probable cause.
    Upon farther investigation all charges were dropped. Sounds proper to me.

    IF the police plant evidence or knowingly falsely accuse you - there are already laws in place for that.

    If it's deliberate, they should suffer the punishment they would have inflicted on the victim. 

    Having said that, it is a well known interrogation technique to persistently make false accusations in order to elicit a confession from a suitably disorientated suspect/fall guy.

    It's not actually illegal to accuse people falsely.

    The aim of the police is to obtain convictions and to do this they are entitled to say whatever they like true or false. The occasional theoretical miscarriage of justice is merely collateral damage except to the convict.

    If done with malice they should be disciplined.  Otherwise they can only do so on the basis of the evidence they have.  Its not a game, but it does happen.
