Could this be an indication that I’m losing my mind?

I just counted out a handful of change, all different denominations, but instead of counting out how much money it is, I counted the quantity of coins.

I'm beginning to see why you aren't rich.

Question: If a person has one  quarter, one dime and one penny, how much money do the have?

    Normal person - "36 cents."

    Randy - "3"

It's a distinct possibility if you still have it to lose.

A simple distraction at the commencement of doing something, can often cause this type of error.

That comma doesn’t belong there at all.

Be that as it may, I find that have become somewhat attached to that particular comma.

(By the way, may I suggest that the words "at all" are redundant.)

Fondness for the comma or not, it’s a single clause with no break in it whatsoever. There are people who are fond of apostrophes or quotation marks to the point that they use them indiscriminately and incorrectly; that doesn’t make the fondness any more defensible than your claim here.

The use of the phrase “at all” in my sentence is wholly appropriate in its use for emphasis.

One of the purposes of a comma is to form a natural pause for breath within a sentence and I correctly applied that concept.
While the words "at all" may indeed have been emphasis within the sentence, they also constitute a tautology.

No amount of defensive speech-making is going to absolve this simple fact: your use of the comma in that particular sentence was absolutely incorrect. This back and forth can continue for as long as you like, and nothing will suddenly change something wrong into something right.

I am well aware of the purposes and functions of a comma, thank you very much.

    And to all:
That naughty comma - Is not his sentence (according to contributor Randy D above) "a single clause with no break in it whatsoever"?

But the basic issue is that the comma doesn't belong there, but you are going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on as if you're not wrong. But unfortunately, you are wrong. Bottom line, done, finished, end of story, completed.

    And to all:
Yes, once again, one can see there may be too many commas in his impetuous response - and no wonder that all this is being posted in "death and dying"! (What on earth does he mean by "you are wrong" - of course I am wrong - I'm married!) This post was edited by Robert at October 3, 2021 3:09 PM MDT

But, you see, I use commas where they belong and you don't.

Is he sure? I get the impression he doesn't really seem quite certain about all this.

    And to all:
I feel confident that I will not be barking up the wrong tree in letting the reader know that the following instructive video will cool everyone down, while for those of us who are comma adverse and have strong feelings upon this potentially divisive topic, there are also no commas to be seen in it:

What is going on here? Why are there possibly unnecessary, not to mention potentially divisive, commas in that sentence? > > > > > > > > This post was edited by Robert at October 3, 2021 12:06 PM MDT
