      I’m sure that during my days aboard ship, some of what we ate was leftover from those days of the ancient wooden sailing ships, LOL!

    That's what they ate aboard ship. I think the question refers to what they had ashore after a tour.
    The rum was watered, too - British Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon ordered that RN sailors' rum ration be diluted and the order was never rescinded. He was known as "The Old Grog" due to the grogram cloak he wore in all weathers - hence the term "grog" for cheap, low-quality liquor.

    I meant actually while their ship was at sea for about 2 months somewhere  between north American ports and European countries. Crossing the pond was usually about a 3 month voyage.
