    It's a rhetorical question.

"Then" is another needless word. Why not just ask, "Why do we...?"

Why are you asking ME, Stu? I am not the person who wrote it, I am not responsible for what was written in absolutely any way, shape or form. Furthermore, I have zero stake in either attacking or defending what was written. YOUR penchant is the crusade against what YOU consider to be useless words. If you don’t have the wherewithal to carry out the campaign of your personal pet peeve on your own, please don’t make the mistake that I have any interest in it whatsoever, or that I will join forces with you. Let this be ample and final notice to you that I am not now nor will I ever be on board with you on this vendetta of yours, so please restrict your protestations to the authors of that which offends you without trying to loop me in as if I cared about it. Thank you.

You mean, "Why do we bother with destinations and NOT just wander about aimlessly?" You would be better off spending less time with needless words like then, as in, "Why, then, do we...?" and more time on essential words like not that help your statement actually, you know, make sense. Grrrrrrr.

Both of you missed the "journey.'. " in the question. Should be  "journey.' " You are too worried about extra words that you are missing basic grammar and punctuation errors.

The first period is for the internal sentence, the second one for the primary sentence, thus it is correct.

No. When the quote is at the end of the sentence, the goes inside the quote (internal sentence) then ends with the quotation mark.
ie. He said, "The journey was fun."

She’s right, she got you. The ending punctuation of the quote is both incorrect and unnecessary.  Argue all you want, it’s still wrong.

Yes, Stu; “ . . . I know what you are meaning about my statement is.” makes perfect sense.
