What are the natural disasters that happen or could happen where you live?

I’m getting one right now.  I’m in the storm cellar with my family and all of my pets.  It’s like the middle of night outside right now.

I hope you don't get any damage.

I got the all clear message about 20 minutes ago.  It missed my house, but now I’m starting to see damage reports on TV from nearby places. 

We're under a watch right now, so I think it's heading our way.

Thanks.  The storm took a turn and missed us. However, there is another storm forming, and depending on its track and if it holds togther, it may come through around midnight.

The tornado watch here expires in a few minutes. I hope we’re all done with this for the night!

Yikes.

I never experienced an earthquake or landslide, but I was near a wildfire in Colorado right after Christmas.  My kids were at my husband’s parents’ house.  They could see the orange glow from the flames at night from the balcony.  Their grandparents tried really hard to keep them from staring out the window, so it left us with a few weeks of dealing with nightmares.

Wildfires are horrible.  The feeling one gets when that order to evacuate or to prepare to evacuate comes is terrifying.  The thought "this can't be real" keeps running through your mind.

I didn’t hear about it right away because I was at an indoor trampoline park with the kids.  When we were driving back, we could see the smoke, but it took a while for it to sink in.  The guy on the radio said it jumped Highway 36, so we thought they were talking about the part of that highway that’s a two lane mountain highway, not the part of that highway that’s an eight lane freeway.  That was totally unexpected.  It didn’t register what was actually going on until I got a text from my cousins.  The boundary for the evacuation zone was the street behind their house.

That’s a not-so-nice variety. Earthquakes are something I never associated with the Midwest, but yeah, I forgot about the New Madrid fault line. This post was edited by Livvie at May 13, 2022 7:45 PM MDT

We get little ones regularly. They say it is better to get the little ones because they prevent the big one. 

Are wildfires new for you too? My parents said they never used to happen here, but thanks to climate change, we have a new natural disaster in the neighborhood!

Do you get a break in the winter? I was in Colorado the week after Christmas and they had a major wildfire which destroyed two cities. Previously, Colorado only had wildfires in the winter but now they have them year round.

The week after Christmas is the middle of summer down here. We haven't had a major fire between June and September - yet.

I know.  You get the exact same storms that affect my area a few hours later. 

  Approximately how far from each other do you two live, please? (Just a rough estimate with ten meters here or there will be fine. I’ll do the rest.)
