For those who can remember, what was your remuneration for the first job you ever worked?

I got my first job in the summer of 1995 and made the princely sum of $5.25/hr

My first full-time job after high school was in a law firm and I was paid $75 a week - $25 more than most secretaries in other professions made.

Doesn't sound like a lot but I'm sure it went a lot further than the median American income ($44,225) does today!

It was summer job as the vacation fill-in. So was just spending and saving money for me. I still lived at home with parents, summer before my senior year. Worked there the summer after I graduated as well. That is were I met my husband. He was working for the company remodeling the nursing home.
I joke that I have been cleaning up after him since before we even went out on our first date.

In high school I worked at a cinema after school, some evenings, and weekends for $1.00/hour.  My mother had to sign so I could work.  I think I was 15.   One of my most favorite dresses of my life was the first purchase I made from that job.  I made all of my clothes starting in 8th grade but I bought this dress.

First real job (not babysitting) was $3.35/hr. Seemed like a fortune!

When you adjust for inflation, I'm sure it was.

Yeah, no kidding. I didn't yet drive, but gas was definitely under $1/gallon, too!

Oh, I'm sure.  I pumped my first tank of gas for about 98¢ or 99¢ per gallon, and this was in 1996.

I kindly suggest that babysitting is a real job (in my opinion). It was my first successful job.  :)

It's certainly an important one! As usual, most of the really important jobs don't pay worth a crap! :)

I'm sure you were a fantastic sitter!

You're right -- I was a great sitter. The parents were very happy and their children liked me. Had lots of laughs and fun.
    :)

And it was an everyday, all day "work hours" job Monday through Friday. I was honored the parents trusted me -- they had known me for many years.

Here I go - - I'm going to say it truthfully and confidently --  "Yes, you are right! I was well-loved by that family!"

    :)

And deservedly so. I even surprised myself at how well I did - and it was much just being myself.

My dad was my first employer.  He started paying me for work on our farm when I was 14.  He started me at $5.85/hour.

Wow!  Five whole dollars and eighty-five cents!  That puts you in the top 1% of earners on this thread!

Summer of 87-88. Salary of $10K per annum.

I'd had a paper round as a kid.

$10K a year to a kid in the late 1980s was like earning six figures today... LOL.

I turned 19 that year, a legal adult. It's also the year I started paying board.

  • My first job was working in a hamburger stand when I was 15 years old. The hamburger stand was a trailer that was painted with a USA flag design. I made ARS 450 per month, which was USD 150 per month in the summer when I wasn't in school.

That's about $37.50 per week... I'm sure it was still like hitting the lottery though.
