Do you want to picture what just happened to WelbyQuentin in the middle of the night?

Literally, 3:00am -- total darkness

I was asleep in bed

I woke, thought, "What was that noise? Sounds like a creature of some kind"

Checked and my cat was on floor sleeping in her usual spot

And then something flew against my head

"Bat"

Light on - yes, a small bat flying around

Turn off bedroom light

Grab cat, leave bedroom, shut bedroom door (to hopefully keep bat in my bedroom)

Run cat down to basement and shut basement door so she stays down there

Grab broom

Turn on only outside porch light

Open front door to outside porch

Back upstairs

Bat is still in bedroom

Open bedroom door and bat starts flying toward light downstairs

For a while I swing at it, swearing, "Get the h"""  out" as it decides to explore more of my first floor in my small house

Swearing and yelling, I find bat flying in my kitchen in back of house

Open kitchen door to outside

Turn on overhead light, yelling and swinging toward it with broom (only actually came in contact about three times)

Bat flies outside

I shut all doors, turn off lights and go to basement to find my cat quietly sitting and looking at me

I gave her well-deserved crunchy treat bites that she loves (good for her teeth the package says)

And . . .

I did NOT apologize to that bat even once

I can picture that all too clearly. As a teenager, I lived in a big old house and bats made several appearances.  We kept badminton racquets handy (easier to handle than a broom and supposedly harder for the bat to hear it coming) for those nights we woke with a bat in our face. Bats terrify me, even though they are probably harmless, yet I have had too many bat encounters to relate. If a bat got into my current home, I  might never sleep another night.

That's the one good thing about living in an apartment building - we may have roaches and centipedes, but no bats!

We had a couple bats in my former condo building. They can get in anywhere!

You know you always have a place to sleep in my spare bedroom . . .

    I get it.   :)  :)

When I see bats outside in the open air-  no big deal for me.
But when I see one flying between my head and my ceiling? Ick. :)

That's a great story haha, but I have to ask: why did you turn off the bedroom light before grabbing your cat?

    Very good question, ha!
I posted this question not ten minutes after it was all over and I knew I wanted to "come down." and I don't know why I turned the bedroom light off but I did. Perhaps so I wouldn't see it until I came back upstairs? (but I had shut my door. ) Leave it to Welbz in the middle of the night.
I'm glad you found my true story great! :)

I would have apologized. Bats are cute little buggers.

    :)

I must admit I apologized to my next-door neighbor - - my racket, yelling and slamming doors woke up his dogs and they were then outside running around agitated. I told him what his dogs had heard.   :)

Geesh!  Ooh!  It touched you.  This would have been a horrible thing for me.  You sound like you handled it well.

Thanks, Thriftymaid! I'm glad it sounds like I handled it well. :)
I was happy not to kill the bat.

    Yikes!

I don't hate bats. They're useful and important. I do NOT want one in my house or swooping down on me at night. I like flying foxes. I would have one of those in my house. Sort of remind me of the flying monkeys in TWOO, a little.
Anyway, sorry that happened to you. Glad you and cat are okay! This post was edited by SavvyAnsley at August 24, 2022 5:38 PM MDT

Thanks so much! Yes, I agree again with you -- like I said up there to Jane S -- outside I find bats fine. Inside a house/room/etc flying around? No.  :)

Wait, you spoke with Jane S? Was it in person, did she invite you over to her place? If so, hook a brutha up with the address, or directions, or coordinates, or draw a map, or take me there the next time you go, or something! You know she wants me, man! Don’t keep the goods all to yourself!
